Exodus 33.7–11a
Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand, each of them, at the entrance of their tents and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and bow down, all of them, at the entrance of their tents. Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.
Reflect
At major entertainment events, people with access privileges have different coloured lanyards. Artists have one colour, backstage crew another, and so on. On several occasions, either because I was performing or as a special guest, I have been fortunate to gain backstage passes at some big events. I love the quiet hum that happens behind the scenes — the roadies and performers, the food and drink, the press and media interviews. It feels good when your ‘name is on the list’ and to be one of the ‘in crowd’.
Moses was blessed to have an intimate relationship with God where he could converse with God, “as one speaks to a friend.” The others would simply stand and watch from a distance. Only Moses had the backstage pass that enabled him to hang out with God; however, today we are all able to have a deep, intimate relationship with God. Jesus Christ has made this possible through making us clean and holy. We have the same privilege as Moses because we too are God’s friends.
Do you talk to God? If not, try it. Chat to God. Tell God the things for which you are thankful, the things with which you struggle, your worries and anxieties, and your hopes for today. Yes, God already knows, but God wants a relationship with you and relationships are built on communication.
Holy God, I thank you for…
Holy God, I struggle with…
Holy God, I am worried about…
Holy God, I hope that…
Pray
Holy God
Thank you that I can be
open and honest with you,
and that I can talk
freely without fear.
Speak to me
through your Holy Spirit,
that I may know your
presence with me.
Now and always.
