Who or what is God?

I kinda understand scripture as an ongoing revelation of the nature of God. The collection of books in the Bible are a human reflection of our understanding of God. The revealing of God’s nature is ongoing and, interestingly, if you look back at scripture you can see that God has always been, for example, loving and merciful. It’s just that we’ve not always ‘got it’. We have, at times, misinterpreted God or God has acted in ways that are for our collective benefit at a specific time and context. I’m not sure if this helps with our reconciling the God we encounter in parts of the O.T. or not, but it might explain it.
