Reflect
After Jesus was baptised, Luke launched into a long genealogy — a list of the ancestry of Jesus — and this included a whole list of names that are really difficult to pronounce! This genealogy of Jesus linked Jesus to several important characters in the history of the Jewish nation.
Firstly, Jesus is linked with king David, Israel’s greatest king. Jesus had royal blood and was eligible to be a king. Secondly, Jesus was linked to Abraham and the promise made to Abraham that the world would be blessed through him. Jesus is the fulfilment of that promise. And thirdly, Jesus was linked to Adam, and this connects Jesus with the whole of humanity.
These three links gave Jesus legal kingship, authority over Israel, and authority over the whole human race. In other words, Jesus was a king, born through the nation of Israel, who had come for the sake of the whole world.
Jesus represented humanity and had everyone in his hands. Luke wanted us to make the connection that as Jesus represented humanity, he also represented the reader — and that means me and it means you.
Do
Have you ever thought of Jesus as representing you? Tell God how this makes you feel — for example, encouraged, humble, secure, or grateful.
Pray
Holy God
Thank you that you came in the person of Jesus,
for the sake of all humanity and for me.
Thank you that king Jesus has authority
over all the world and all creation.
In response, I give myself to you again,
this day and for ever.
Amen.
Think
Adam was created by God, but Luke is implying that in some way Adam was also the child of God. How does it make you view humanity to think of all humans as being God’s children?

This encourages me to continue to seek the Divine in my comparative theology studies! I truly believe that all of humanity belongs to the same God, we are all his children.
